MLB: Day Forty-Two

What a long and crazy game is what for the Washington Nationals and the Florida Marlins. The game lasted over 6 ½ hours. The reason was because of rain delays. The longest delay lasted for 2 hours and 51 minutes. But for the Nationals’ fans who stuck around rainy RFK, the wait was worth it.
The Nationals entered the bottom of the 9th inning trailing the Marlins 3-2. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Ryan Zimmerman crushed a 1-0 pitch for a homerun and the Nationals won the game 7-3.
Also in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers bounced back nicely in their series with the New York Mets. Ben Sheets pitched 6 solid innings for the Brewers and got the win. On the other side, Mike Pelfrey took the loss for the Mets.
The Brewers scored a run in the 1st and the 3rd innings. Then they exploded for 5 runs in the 8th, 3 runs in the 9th, and 2 runs in the 4th. Their 8th inning outburst was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of JJ Hardy.
Bobby Cox, the Atlanta Braves manager, passed legendary baseball manager, Sparky Anderson, for wins on Saturday. Cox got his 2,195th win. It took him 26 seasons to do so, which is the same amount of season it took Anderson. Cox’s winning percentage stands at .564.
But Cox’s landmark win almost wasn’t the big story from the game featuring the Braves against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The big story was the near perfect game and almost no-hitter by Braves pitcher Chuck James. He was perfect through 5 innings and then he walked 2 batters in the 6th inning. But he still had the no-hitter going into the 7th inning.
In the 7th inning James hung a breaking ball to Jason Bay and Bay ripped the pitch into left center for a base hit. The Braves still went on to win the game easily, 9-2.
All 6 division leaders won on Saturday. The Boston Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers, the Los Angeles Angels, the Atlanta Braves, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers were all victorious.
The largest lead belongs to the Brewers. The have an 8 game cushion over the Houston Astros. Next is the Red Sox with a 7 game lead over the Baltimore Orioles. Then the Dodgers and the Angels each have 2 game leads in their divisions. Finally, the Tigers and the Braves each have 1.5 game leads in their divisions.
So, every team has over a game’s lead in their division and the Brewers and the Red Sox are threatening to run away in their divisions. We’ll see if these teams can stay in the lead as the season rolls deeper into May.
