This weekend will be a very important test for the Milwaukee Brewers. They’re playing a 3 game series against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. As the season grows longer, more and more teams are going to realize that the Brewers are playing good ball and more and more teams will be ready to play the Brewers.

On Friday, the Mets and Brewers played a very entertaining game. The game featured Jeff Suppan (with 5 wins) starting for the Brewers and Jorge Sosa (2 wins) starting for the Mets. Suppan came over to the Brewers this year from the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals while Sosa isn’t nearly as well-known but has been pitching very well for the Mets in his last couple of starts.

Neither pitcher allowed a run in the game for the first 3 ½ innings, but then the Mets exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the 4th. The Mets went on to win the game 5-4 after the Brewers made it interesting by scoring 2 runs in the top of the 8th.

The loss snapped the Brewers winning streak but they still hold the best record in the Majors. They will resume the 3 game series with the Mets on Saturday. This is a very good early season match-up and it will also help tell whether the Brewers are for real.

Other big games this weekend include:

The Detroit Tigers playing at the Minnesota Twins. Both of these teams have a shot at winning the American League Central. The Tigers took the 1st game on Friday night.

The New York Yankees playing at the Seattle Mariners. Just when it looked like things were coming together for the Yankees, they’ve now lost 2 in a row. They now have a couple more games against the Mariners who are a game over .500.

The St. Louis Cardinals playing at the San Diego Padres. The Padres have been playing good baseball all season and the Cards are trying to get something going. In Friday’s game, Jake Peavey pitched yet another gem. He threw 7 scoreless innings and led the Padres to a 7-0 win. Peavey is easily the best pitcher who nobody really thinks about. He may even be the best pitcher overall.

The Cleveland Indians playing at the Oakland A’s. The Indians lost to the A’s on Friday and they’re now trailing the Tigers in their division by 1.5 games. The A’s are a tough team too. So, the Indians need to play good ball so that they don’t leave the weekend down farther than they already are.
