MLB: Day Thirty-Eight

The two interesting homerun stories of the season were on display on Tuesday. Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez both went deep. Also, on Tuesday Josh Beckett continued his amazing start to the season and the Tigers, Indians, and Brewers all stayed hot.
Barry Bonds hit his 11th homerun of the year during a Giants 4-1 loss to the Mets. Bonds is now just 10 homeruns short of tying Hank Aaron for the most homeruns of all time. Bonds is also on pace to hit over 50 homers this year. But homeruns wasn’t the biggest story involving Bonds on Tuesday.
The biggest story involved what Boston Red Sox pitcher said about Bonds. On a radio show, Schilling said that Bonds has admitted to beating his wife and cheating as baseball, among other things. Schilling went on to say that Bonds is not a good person and that the fact that Bonds is about to break Aaron’s record is “sad”.
Well, for the record, Bonds has never admitted to doing any of the things that Schilling said he confessed to. But Schilling is never one to shy away from making controversial statements. The interesting part of all of this is that San Francisco and Bonds are going to play Boston and Schilling in the middle of June. Perhaps Schilling will find himself on the mound facing Bonds when Bonds is on the brink of tying or breaking Aaron’s record.
Speaking of Red Sox pitchers, Joch Beckett is still perfect on the season (7-0). In his next start, Beckett will be looking for the record for most consecutive winds to start a season.
The other homer story from this year was A-Rod’s explosion of power at the beginning of the year. A-Rod is still hitting the ball pretty well but his homerun pace has slowed considerably. In fact, it had been well over a dozen games since his last homer. But he got one on Tuesday in an 8-2 win for the Yankees over the Texas Rangers.
Meanwhile the Tigers, the Indians, and Brewers all won on Tuesday. The Tigers won their 8th straight game by beating the Seattle Mariners. But the Tigers still trail the Cleveland Indians by a ½ game because the Indians keep winning too. Cleveland beat the Angels on Tuesday. The Brewers also won on Tuesday. They beat the Washington Nationals 6-4.
One more note about the Yankees: Since George Steinbrenner said something has to change and basically put Joe Torre’s job on the line, the New York Yankees have been playing much better. In fact, the Yankees have gone from being in the cellar of the American League East to being in 2nd place.
However, the Yanks are still below .500 but they can pull themselves up to the .500 mark if they can beat the Rangers again on Wednesday night.
