MLB: Day Thirty-Five

As the Major League Baseball season really gets swinging in the first weekend of baseball in May, things are starting to get interesting. There were many great things that happened on Saturday and the day came very close to being historic.
The Detroit Tigers caught the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central. The Tigers came from behind to beat the Kansas City Royals. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians lost to the Baltimore Orioles. Now, the Indians will have to win on Sunday or they just might find themselves in 2nd place at the end of the weekend series. Again, it is still early but the Tigers are beginning to look like a very good team.
The entered the season with great starting pitching, a great bullpen, and average hitting. Well, their bullpen let them down early in the season and their hitting was even worse. Now, the hitting has come around and the bullpen looks dominant again. However, the Tigers did lose possibly their best pitcher in the pen, Joel Zumaya. Zumaya sprained his finger while warming-up in the bullpen. He will be placed on the 15 day DL and his finger will undergo an MRI on Sunday.
Barry Bonds went deep again. As I’ve been saying, the faster he can get to the record the better. He also better hope he breaks the record before his own fans in San Francisco. Otherwise, instead of someone running out of the stands and trying to slap him on the back, he just might have a fan run out of the stands and try to tackle him.
The New York Yankees Chien-Ming Wang nearly threw a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners. Wang made it into the 8th inning and got the first out in the 8th without giving up a base runner. Then Ben Broussard broke up the perfect game.
But the Yankees have to be thrilled with the performance. It’s pitching they’ve been lacking and it’s pitching they got in a huge way. The Yankees pounded the Seattle Mariners 8-1.
On the other side Jeff Weaver has had a nightmare start to the season. He came over to the Mariners from the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. So far this season he is 0-5 with an ERA over 15. He didn’t pitch too badly at the beginning of the game but he collapsed on the 6th. Weaver has become a journeyman as he has pitched for the Tigers, the Yankees, the Cardinals, and the Mariners. I may have missed a team in there as well.
If he keeps pitching the way he has so far, the Mariners are going to wish that Seattle was one stop he missed.
