MLB: Day Thirty-Three

It looks like the New York Yankees may have bought their manager, Joe Torre, a little more time. The Yankees took both games of a doubleheader from the Texas Rangers. Those two wins gave the Yankees the three game sweep of the series in Arlington, Texas.
There were 2 important things that happened for the Yankees during the doubleheader:
The first is that their reliever, Mariano Rivera, earned a save in both of the games. Rivera struggled at the beginning of the season – the fact that he earned just his 2nd and 3rd saves of the season on Thursday backs that up. Although part of his low save number can also be attributed to the fact that the Yankees are playing sub .500 baseball this season.
The second important thing that happened during the doubleheader was that Mike Mussina made his return from the DL and pitched a solid – if not short – game. Mussina’s solid outing has to give the Yankees confidence that once they get back all their injured pitchers they’ll start winning games in bunches.
This weekend the Yankees will be back at home to take on the Seattle Mariners. You can bet George Steinbrenner will be keeping a close eye on everything.
The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians stayed hot as well. The Boston Red Sox beat the Mariners by score of 8-7. The Cleveland Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays.
Many people are still waiting to see if Cleveland Indians can keep the lead in the American League Central. Most people think the division will won by the Tigers, the White Sox, or the Twins. And the Tigers are beginning to get things together and have strung together 4 wins themselves. It should be interesting to see if the Indians get caught looking over their shoulders this weekend and lose the division lead. The Indians will be playing the Orioles while the Tigers will be playing the lowly Royals.
This weekend the Boston Red Sox will be playing the Minnesota Twins. The Twins are still trying to find their way this season. The Twins have been doing okay but haven’t been able to string anything great together. They nearly swept the Tigers last weekend but then followed that up with a fairly bad week.
Also, this weekend it will be interesting to see if Bonds can go yard again and if the Cardinals can begin to move past the tragedy they endured last weekend.
