MLB: Day Thirty

Posted on | May 2, 2007 | No Comments

Monday saw a somewhat limited schedule  (especially in the American League) as Monday’s often do. The Joe Torre watch had to be put on hold for a day because the Yankees didn’t play. The Yankees will be playing against the Texas Rangers starting Tuesday night though. That will be an opportunity to see the Yankees young rookie, Phil Hughes again. I wonder what Joe Torre is thinking when Steinbrenner is fixing to fire him and he has to send a young 20 year old pitcher to the mound.

The American League only had three games on the docket. Jeremy Bonderman, who’s been pitching very well all season but getting very little run support, finally got his first win. He’s now 1-0. Roy Halladay pitched another gem for the Toronto Blue Jays as they beat the Rangers 6-1. Halladay is now 4-0. And John Lackey continued to pitch well for the Anaheim Angels. He pitched the Angles to a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Lackey is 4-2 on the season with a 2.19 ERA.

The National League had a busier night. They had just about a full schedule going.

One of the biggest stories in the National League continues to be Barry Bonds and his pursuit of the all-time homeruns record. Bonds is going to have to take advantage of his opportunities when they come because teams are starting to walk him all the time. Bonds walked three times on Monday. His team, the San Francisco Giants, put their weekend sweep behind them and beat the Colorado Rockies 9-5.

The Giants jumped out quickly with five runs in the bottom of the first. The highlight of the inning was a three run homer by third baseman Pedro Feliz. It was his fifth homer of the season.

It was sad to see the St. Louis Cardinals play a game on Monday night. They looked distracted and disinterested. Of course the Cards lost pitcher Josh Hancock in an automobile accident over the weekend.

Making things even more difficult, the Cards are playing the Milwaukee Brewers who are probably the best team so far this season. The Brewers have a job to do and they’re going to do it regardless of the state of mind of the Cardinals.

Time heals all wounds and the Cards can only hope that’ll hold true for them.
