LA Angels vs Baltimore

Posted on | April 17, 2006 | No Comments

The Angels (who are a -120 road favorite), send Jeff Weaver to the mound. On the year he is 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA. In his career against the Orioles, he is 3-3, with a 4.36 ERA, allowing only 38 hits and 9 walks in 43.1 innings.

The Orioles start Daniel Cabrera, who is also 0-1 on the year, but with an ERA of 11.37. He has allowed sixteen (16 !!) walks in only 6.1 innings. In his career against the Angels, he is 1-1, with an 8.10 ERA, allowing 13 hits and 8 walks in 10 innings.

While Weaver’s numbers have not been great this season, Cabrera’s have been down-right awful. You’d have to be a certifiable lunatic to bet the Orioles tonight, right ??

Wrong !! The home-dog Orioles are gonna win tonight. Here’s why. Look–I know Cabrera has allowed a ton of walks this year. But let’s dig deeper. In his 6.1 innings, he has allowed only 6 hits, and he does have 11 strikeouts. His opponent’s batting average against is only .261. As a team, the Angels have struck out 72 times this year but, get this, they have walked only 19 times this season–which is by far the fewest amount of walks in all of baseball (AL and NL). If there is one team that is NOT going to be patient with Cabrera (and let him walk them), it is the LA Angels. Cabrera’s career numbers against the Angels aren’t good, but other than Orlando Cabrera and Vlad Guerrero (both of whom have only 2 hits in their 4 at bats against him), none of this season’s Angels have either seen him before or have done anything at all against him.

Meanwhile, let’s look at Jeff Weaver. In his 12.1 innings this season, he may have allowed only 3 walks, but he has also allowed 18 hits. His opponent’s batting average against is a whopping .346. Now check out some of the Orioles career batting averages against him: Gibbons .556 (5 for 9); Gomez .400 (4 for 10); Ramon Hernandez .382 (13 for 34); and Tejada .400 (10 for 25). As a team, the Orioles are batting .294 against righty pitchers this year. They WILL hit Jeff Weaver tonight.
This is my only play today and I expect it to be a winner. Good luck everyone!
