Premiership Middlesbrough v Tottenham

While ‘Boro should have done enough to ensure their premiership survival, Tottenham are hot on the trail of a place in Europe.  Two places and one point away, Tottenham are most definitely in with a shout of Europe next season, but they need to take something out of today’s game to keep up with the pace.  Martin Jol is already looking towards next season, with rumours of a bid for Newcastle’s Kieron Dyer, and a strong suspicion that Jermaine Defoe’s on off love affair with Spurs may be nearing an end.

On the team front , Middlesbrough should have Abel Xavier and Julio Arca back in contention meaning that Gareth Southgate has a full squad to choose from.  Surely now is the time to try and put on a show for the ‘Boro faithful who have again been starved of any real progress, with many still yet to accept Southgate as the man for the future.

Tottenham will be without Teemu Taino and Mido who both have niggling injuries, although they will be pleased to see Paul Stalteri return.  The defence will again be decimated with Anthony Gardner, Young-Pyo Lee and Benoit Assou-Ekotto still unavailable.  It seems like months since Jol has had the pleasure of picking from a  full squad, although it is essential that Spurs pull together for that final run in.

Spurs have lost only one of their last eight games and ‘Boro have only won one of their last seven games – is the result straight forward?  Southgate will however be encouraged by his teams home form which sees them defending a run of eight home games undefeated.

On their day Middlesbrough have the potential to score a bag full, and with Tottenham’s lack of first choice defenders, maybe they will see a few chances today.  However, Tottenham have the ageless Robbie Keane carrying the line, a player who has been in excellent form this season
