Giants at Dodgers

Last night the Giants slipped by their arch nemesis, the Dodgers. Tonight, the Dodgers look to right the ship. The game is close to a pick-em. The Giants are sending Jason Schmidt to the mound and the Dodgers are countering with leftie Odalis Perez. The under/over is 7.5. There’s definitely a play in this game. Let’s look at some important factors.
- Not including last night’s game, the Dodgers are averaging 6.9 runs per game, while the Giants are averaging 4.88 runs per game.
- Against Atlanta, Perez game up 7 runs in just 3 innings of work. Against the Pirates, he was better—giving up 1 run in 5 innings.
- Perez’s home ERA was 3.34 in 2005. In 3 starts against the Giants last year, he has a 3.12 ERA.
- Schmidt has pitched against Atlanta and San Diego this year. Both times he went 7 innings and he is giving up 4.5 runs per game so far this year.
- In 2005, Schmidt faced the Dodgers five times and had a 3.62 ERA. His average outing was about 5.2 innings.
- Schmidt had a 5.17 ERA on the road last year and this year is shaping up the same way.
- In 2005, these two teams met 19 times. The average runs scored per game was 8.42.
Given this information, I am leaning towards two plays, the Dodgers and the over. The Dodgers are at home and appear to have a leg up on the Giants. It’s very likely that Perez and the bullpen can hold the Giants to around three runs. I also like the over here. Schmidt has struggled on the road and the Dodgers have one of the best scoring offenses in this young season. Last night they were held in check and tonight could be a high scoring affair for them. It’s very likely that the Dodgers score 5-8 runs tonight.
