MLB: Day Twenty-Two

Arguably the three biggest series this past weekend – the Red Sox v Yankees, the White Sox v the Tigers, and the Braves v Mets – all ended with great games. Every single game was within a run or tied as late as the 8th inning. And in the end the winner on Sunday either earned their first win, their second win, or a sweep.
Dice-K took to the mound for the Red Sox on Sunday night. It was the Japanese pitcher’s first taste of the huge rivalry between Boston and New York. Coming into the game Dice-K had pitched well but he wasn’t dominant. Despite pitching pretty well Dice-K entered the game with a 1-2 record.
Against the Yankees he probably had his worst outing in quite awhile but he still got the win. Dice-K improved his record to 2-2 but his ERA rose to an even 4.0.
The game was a wild one and wasn’t decided until Papelbom got A-Rod to ground out in the top of the 9th with one on and 2 out. The Red Sox won the game 7-6 and completed the 3 game sweep of their arch nemesis New York Yankees.
Earlier in the day the Detroit Tigers narrowly escaped being swept by the Chicago White Sox. Marcus Thames hit a 2-run homer with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th and his team trailing by 2. That sent the game to extra innings where Placido Polanco eventually singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning.
The Tigers won the game 6-5. It put a happy ending on what was almost a disastrous homestand.
Also on Sunday the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets battled on the field to see who would win their 3 game series. The Mets used a 5 run 6th inning to take a 6-3 lead. However, the Braves came back with 3 runs in the 7th and 3 more runs in the 8th.
Those two big innings led the Braves to a 9-6 win. They are now in first place in the National League East by a half game over the Mets.
On Monday the Yankees will play the Devil Rays, the Tigers will play the Angels, the Red Sox will play the Blue Jays, the White Sox will play the Royals, the Braves will play the Marlins, and the Mets will play Rockies.
