Premiership Aston Villa v Portsmouth

Posted on | April 22, 2007 | No Comments

While Aston Villa have little to play for, it is not the style of Martin O’Neil to give up on any game and he will be looking to push Villa into the top half of the table.  He has been unlucky with injuries of late with the giant John Carew a particular miss of late.  Both Carew and Patrik Berger seem sure to be available for selection after injury and Gavin McCann is set to return from a two match ban.

Portsmouth on the other hand have much to play for with Pompey still in the hunt for a European Cup place – something which has been sorely missed in recent times.  Harry Redknapp’s highly talented yet unpredictable strike force have been performing better of late, with Kanu a revelation this season.  The enigma which is Benjani has yet to show consistent form this season, although there is no doubt that he is a great talent – if anyone can get the best out of him, Harry Redknapp can!

Aston Villa are currently on a run of 6 games undefeated, while Pompey’s form has been mixed to say the least, with a great win over Champions Elect Manchester United, followed by defeat to Watford before returning to winning ways against the Toon Army.

Martin O’Neil’s tenure at Villa Park started in fine form with Villa riding high in the table, but high profile signings Petrov and Maloney have yet to shine and it was only the recent run of 6 games undefeated which allowed them to pull away from the relegation zone.  Portsmouth’s away record is disappointing to say the least, while Fratton Park has become something of a fortress for Redknapp’s army.

Even though Pompey have most to play for, Martin O’Neil desperately needs to finish the season on a high to secure his position at the club for next season.  Expect O’Neil to rally his troops for one final push into the top half of the table, with a home in likely.

Forecast : Home Win
