Premiership: Fulham vs. Blackburn

Posted on | April 21, 2007 | No Comments

With Blackburn virtually safe on 43 points this match is more of a focus for Fulham. Situated three points above the relegation zone, having sacked their young, highly respected manager Chris Coleman and replaced him with Northern Ireland coach and former Wimbledon crazy-gang member Lawrie Sanchez, this is a must-win home game for the Cottagers.

With Charlton Athletic playing against Sheffield United at the same time as this game, Fulham could find themselves only one point above 18th spot. With West Ham starting to run out of games and Watford too far behind to hold much hope, it is looking like one other from Charlton, Sheffield United, Fulham and Wigan Athletic who play Liverpool at Anfield today. By the end of today there could be just one point separating all four of them but Fulham also could be six points clear of trouble depending on these results.

Blackburn’s recent record of four wins and four losses reflects their inconsistency throughout the season. However, Fulham have only managed three draws in their last eight and are looking a sad unit with the worst current form in the Premiership, even worse than doomed Watford.

With Blackburn’s away record of 5 wins this season reflecting their position in the middle of the table and their no-nonsense approach to football they may prove too strong for a Fulham defence. However, this is a strange stage of the season when lower teams frequently beat mid-table clubs with little but league position to play for. If Blackburn score first then expect them to win but Fulham have some strong-willed players of there own, such as American striker Brian McBride who often heads in from crosses and corners.

Current odds at the bookies just favour Fulham but a draw looks just as likely as anything
