West Indies vs Bangladesh preview

Posted on | April 18, 2007 | No Comments

West Indies will look to salvage some lost pride when they face Bangladesh in their penultimate game of the super eights at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The West Indies have let their guard down when it mattered the most, and as a result, the hosts are no longer in contention for a spot in the last four. They were one of the few teams will a 100% win record going into the super eight stage, and it was hoped that they could emulate the side of 1996 by atleast getting into the semifinals. However some abject displays- both with bat and ball have left much to be desired and it is too late to fight for a semifinal spot. In the last three super eight games where the opposition batted first- ( NZ, RSA, AUS), it has always scored above 300. Also the fact that they had to play Australia and New Zealand in quick succession, and the rest of the teams after a gap of 10 days didn’t help. Chris Gayle is yet to get a big one in this tournament.

Bangladesh have caused two major upsets in this tournament, by beating India and South Africa.  Unfortunately for Habibul Bashar and his boys, they have not managed to replicate the same amount of consistency in the other games. The last defeat to Ireland would have definitely hurt the Bangladeshis and they will be very keen to prove that they are not 1 day wonders. They sit above Ireland in the points table on run rate, but a crushing defeat to the West Indies could send them below their fellow minnows from Europe. The key for Bangladesh as always will be their spinning trio, Mortaza, Rasel, Aftab Ahmed and Ashraful

Brian Lara is retiring after this tournament, and the West Indies team do owe something to their fans. I expect them to win, given that Bangladesh haven’t beaten them in recent years. The unpredictability and recent poor form of the West Indies might help Bangladesh make a fight of it. Chanderpaul , Lara and Bravo the men for the hosts
