Both City and Liverpool secured 1-0 wins in their Europa league ties in midweek. But the real battle for points is in the Premier League and win would be invaluable at this early stage in the campaign. Will City prove too strong for the Merserysiders at home? Expectations are sky high at the CoMS and fans are expected to be present in large numbers for City’s home opener against Liverpool. Roberto Mancini is expected to give Mario Balotelli his Premier League debut. The crowd will also get to see James Milner in action. Milner is expected to start in place of Shaun Wright Phillips. City, being at home will play with an attacking formation. As a result, one of Barry or De Jong will miss out. Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng remain sidelined with injuries. Joe Hart will take his place between the sticks after the Man of the Match performance in City’s first game at the Lane.

Roy Hodgson will welcome back Javier Mascherano who missed the midweek game with a calf problem. Daniel Agger’s participation in the tie is a doubt though. Joe Cole begins his three match ban that he received for the red card against the Gunners. Fernando Torres is expected to play from the start.

Match Verdict: Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool (Tevez/Gerrard)

City are yet to gel as a cohesive unit. They have been scrappy in recent games and goals have come at a premium. I don’t expect a high scoring game. A 1-1 draw perhaps.
