Newcastle United start their Barclays Premier League campaign with a trip to Old Trafford to face the Red Devils who are determined to regain the title which they surrendered to Chelsea last season.

Manchester United have made three signings and have much of the same squad as the previous season. Of the three new faces at Old Trafford, only Hernandez may start the match against the Magpies while Chris Smalling is expected to make the bench. Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand and Anderson are on the long term injury list but Michael Owen might be fit to face his former club.

Dan Gosling and Sol Campbell are set to make their Newcastle debut while another new signing James Perch may have to wait for his first outing. Newcastle are close to signing Hatem Ben Arfa after the player was left out of the Marseille squad to face Valenciennes. The winger will prove to be an invaluable addition to Chris Hughton’s squad but is unlikely to feature on Monday. However Newcastle will have defensive problems as Danny Simpson and Steve Taylor are out with long term injuries.

Newcastle United have never beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League. That combined with their defensive problems and Man United’s attacking options there is no way for the Magpies to get anything out of the game.
