McDowell a man to watch at Whistling Straits

Graeme McDowell is currently tucked relatively low down in the US PGA Betting winner’s market for a player that won this year’s US Open. The American dominance of majors in recent years always makes overseas contenders outsiders, but closer scrutiny of McDowell’s prospects suggests the Ulsterman might be a man to follow in the season’s final major.

McDowell’s win at Pebble Beach meant the last eight majors played on American soil have produced five winners from overseas, whilst McDowell’s close friend Padraig Harrington’s success in three majors over a short period proves elusive consistency at the big ones can be achieved.

Golf Betting pundits note how there also more scientific reasons to back McDowell. His opening round 65 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational marks him out as a man in decent form on long American courses, which is of relevance for Whistling Straits, the second longest course to host a major.

The Straits course at the Wisconsin venue is modelled on a traditional British links course, which might help make Europeans more attractive to punters and McDowell’s 23rd finish at St Andrews suggests his seaside game is in reasonable order.

McDowell’s consistency at majors – he has made eight of the nine cuts in majors – is a significant factor, as he often gives himself a chance in big events by featuring in the third and fourth rounds. McDowell has finished in the top 20 five times in that steady run and his success at the US Open proves that constantly putting yourself in a position to go all the way pays dividends.
