Gerrard set to stay at Anfield

Liverpool fans can breathe a sigh of relief – Steven Gerrard looks set to stay at the club.

The England star had been linked with a move away from Anfield after the side failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

However, following the arrival of new manager Roy Hodgson, Gerrard has revealed he is happy to stay put to boost Liverpool’s online football betting odds for success next season.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said: “I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and having done so, I’m very impressed with his plans for the future.”

What’s even more encouraging for fans of the Reds is the fact leaving never seemed to enter Gerrard’s mind.

Indeed, after the arrival of Joe Cole Hodgson revealed that Gerrard and Jamie Carragher had done a lot to convince the former Chelsea man that Liverpool was the place to be. Hardly the actions of someone with one eye on the exit.

Of course, Hodgson’s battle to keep his best players is far from over – the futures of Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano are yet to be decided. However, with Gerrard on board that task should be a bit easier.

The challenge won’t end their – Liverpool’s squad remains exceedingly thin – but with the addition of a decent left-back, the manger will at least have a good first XI at his disposal.

Can he turn Liverpool into likely contenders when it comes to premier league winning odds though? That might be too much to ask.

Given what Hodgson achieved on very limited resources at Fulham, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he could fashion a unit capable of challenging for Champions League football next season, despite his more pessimistic take on things.

At the moment though, he’ll just be hoping that Torres and Mascherano are still wearing the Red of Liverpool after the transfer window shuts. If he can manager that, then the new Liverpool boss will have had a successful summer.
