La Liga: Sevilla vs. Racing de Santander

I’ve got my eye on this match as I have a feeling it is going to be one of the most exciting games of the weekend. Both teams have everything to play for. Sevilla are just two points behind leaders Barcelona in La Liga, and are still very much alive in the King’s cup and UEFA. For their part, Racing de Santander are fast turning into the revelation of the present league. The ninety four year old club has never been in such a positive position, and it is easy to see the hunger on the faces of the players. This hunger was very much in evidence in last week’s epic La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao, where the Cantabrian club went behind three times but still managed to fight their way back and win it five goals to four. They have never played in a European competition but things might be about to change. Racing are currently in seventh place and just two points from a UEFA spot. Their form is outstanding, with four wins and two draws in the last six games. In fact, if the league had started at Christmas they would be leaders by a large margin. Coach Miguel Angel Portugal is expected to field his best side, which includes the surprising ‘little and large’ duo of the giant Serb Nicola Zigic and home grown talent Pedro Munitis. Zigic is fast becoming the talk of half of Europe, and even Sir Alex Ferguson has sent his brother to watch him, and when that happens you know the player has something to offer.
For Sevilla’s part, they can’t afford to lose sight of Barcelona and could even finish the weekend as leaders. When the whistle blows on Sunday evening, they will already know the result of the Zaragoza – Barcelona game, which would give them another added incentive to do well. My only concern is that they might be too tired after Thursday’s UEFA cup win against Tottenham. I am going to stick my head on the line here and am going for an away win by a small margin, as I think Sevilla are going to be tired while Racing de Santander will be fresher and hungrier.

Good call, though Santander didn’t win, a draw is good enough for my team, Barcelona!
