It’s a repeat of the 2006 World Cup with Mexico and Argentina meeting again in the Round of 16. Maxi Rodriguez scored a stunner in extra time four years ago to send Argentina through to the quarter finals. Maradona would be hoping that his side finish the task in normal time itself. Read our preview and head over to Bodog to place your bets.
Argentina – last five games- most recent first
Argentina 2-0 Greece (Demichelis,Palermo)
Argentina 4-1 South Korea (Higuain*3,OG)
Argentina 1-0 Nigeria (Heinze)
Argentina 5-0 Canada ( Maxi Rodriguez*2, Angel Di Maria, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero)
Argentina have looked impressive in their group games – winning all three and keeping a clean sheet in two of them. Maradona gave a lot of fringe players a start against Greece. He will call back Higuain, Tevez, Angel Di Maria, Mascherano and Walter Samuel into the starting line up against Mexico. Jonas Gutierrez is also available for selection after serving his suspension. Heinze, Mascherano and Bolatti are on a yellow. Juan Veron created a record for most passes completed at a World Cup game against Greece. “TheLittle Witch” as he is known, would play an important role in the centre of the park.
Mexico form- recent games- most recent first
Mexico 0-1 Uruguay
Mexico 2-0 France (Javier Hernandez, Blanco)
Mexico 1-1 South Africa ( Rafael Marquez)
Italy 1-2 Mexico ( Carlos Vela, Alberto Medina)
Mexico 5-1 Gambia (Javier Hernandez*2, Adolfo Bautista*2, Alberto Medina)
Javier Aguirre’s side has impressed in bits and parts. A creditable win against France was accompanied by dropped points against the hosts and Uruguay. Mexico welcome back Effrain Juarez into the fold. He returns after serving a suspension. There are doubts over Carlos Vela’s participation. Andreas Guardado would play on the left wing in Vela’s absence. The striker’s spot is a toss up between Javier Hernandez, Franco and Blanco.
Verdict: Argentina 2-0 Mexico (Messi, Tevez)
