Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay play South Korea in the first knockout game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The winners of this game will face either USA or Ghana in the last eight and thus have a realistic chance of making the semi finals. Will Korea produce the kind of performance that saw them make the semis in 2002 under Hiddink? Check out the odds offered by Paddy Power on a Korean win.
Uruguay form- recent games- most recent first
Uruguay 1-0 Mexico (Suarez)
Uruguay 3-0 South Africa (Forlan*2,Perriera)
France 0-0 Uruguay
Uruguay 4-1 Israel ( Diego Forlan, Maximiliano Pereira, Sebastien Abreu*2)
Switzerland 1-3 Uruguay ( Diego Forlan, Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez)
Tabarez works on 4-4-1-2 formation with Diego Forlan playing in the slightly withdrawn role behind Suarez and Cavani. Diego Perez will slot into defensive midfield. Captain Diego Lugano has been inspirational at the heart of the defence. Three of their back four – Victorino, Lugano and Fucile are on a yellow card. Another yellow would see them miss the quarter final if Uruguay qualify.
Korea form- last five games- most recent first
South Korea 2-2 Nigeria (Lee JS, Park Chu Yong)
South Korea 1-4 Argentina (Lee Chung Yong)
South Korea 2-0 Greece (JS Lee, Park Ji Sung)
Spain 1-0 South Korea
South Korea 0-1 Belarus
Coach Huh Jung Mo needs to shore up his defense for this very crucial tie. Cho Yong Hyung and Lee Jung Soo have been satisfactory at the centre of the defense but they have leaked a lot of goals from the right flank. Cha Do Ri, who was reinstated against Nigeria, was at fault when Kalu Uche scored the first goal. Oh Beom Seok who played against Argentina was criticized for his positional sense. An option would be to move Lee Yong Pyo to right back and play Kim Dong Jin at left back. The Koreans would again rely on set pieces and the attcking nous of Park Ji Sung, Lee Chung Yong and Park Chu Young.
Verdict: Uruguay 2-0 Korea (Forlan, Suarez)
