MLB: Day Three

Posted on | April 4, 2007 | No Comments

Last year the New York Mets lost a tough seven game playoff series to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals went on the beat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Now, the Mets are taking out their revenge at the beginning of the season. Of course, it won’t help too much but it’s better than nothing. \

On opening night the Mets won easily. Then in the second game of the season for these two teams, the Mets got a brilliant pitching performance from starting pitcher Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez. El Duque pitched seven great innings giving up only five hits and one run. The Mets won again, this time by a score of 4-1.

It’s a little early in the season to proclaim the Mets the favorite in the National League but they’re certainly starting out strong. And considering that they appear to be at least as good as last year (when they barely missed going to the Series) they have to at the very least be a favorite to be one of the favorites.

If that makes any sense.

See the problem is that the baseball season is so long and so many things – mainly injuries – can derail a team that it’s tough to name a favorite until about June or July. Plus there always seems to be a team that comes out of nowhere – witness the Tigers last year.

If the Mets can sweep the Cardinals on Wednesday night then that would be pretty big. I mean the Cards are still the defending World Series champs. And this series is being played in St. Louis.

Again, it’s early in the season but the Cards don’t want to get swept on their home field. It could spell bad times for them. Though if they start playing well it won’t matter too much. Certainly they’d rather be swept in April than in September. But the more wins a team gets in April the fewer they’ll have to get in September.

Also, on Wednesday night the Yankees will welcome Andy Pettite back to the mound. Pettite left the Yankees for the Houston Astros a few years ago. Since then the Yankees haven’t won a World Series championship as they did several times with Pettite.

Also, on Wednesday afternoon the Tigers will attempt to win their first game of the season. Along with the Cards, last year’s World Series participants are a combined 0 and 3 this year. The Tigers will hope to get into the win column against the Blue Jays.
