Hot favourites Spain open their World Cup campaign with a tricky tie against Ottmar Hitzfeld’s Switzerland at Durban. Check out the odds at 12Bet for Fernando Torres winning the Golden Boot Award.

Spain – last few games – most recent game on top
v.Poland – Win 6-0 (Villa,Silva,Alonso,Fabregas,Torres,Pedro)
v.Korea – Win 1-0 (Jesus Navas)
v.Saudi Arabia – Win 3-2 (Villa, Alonso, Llorente)
v.France – Win 2-0 (Villa,Ramos)

On paper, Spain have the most talented squad and should walk away with the Cup. But Vicente del Bosque’s men will have to shed their ‘perennial underachievers’ tag as soon as possible.

Two of the most feared strikers in Europe – Fernando Torres and David Villa will lead the line for Spain. The midfield has a plethora of riches including the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Alonso jostling for two places. Spain lack a bit of experience on the wings though and could be found out in wide areas.

del Bosque has confirmed that Iniesta will take his position in the starting line-up against Switzerland leaving Spain with no more injury worries.

Switzerland – last few games – most recent game on top
v.Italy – Draw 1-1 (Inler)
v.Costa Rica- Loss 0-1
v.Uruguay – Loss 1-3 (Inler)
v.Norway – Loss 0-1

Switzerland’s greatest strength is their manager. With the limited talent that they possess in the squad, the Swiss would need to be very meticulously organised to get through the group stages.

A lot of attacking play will go through Alexander Frei and Hakan Yakin, both of whom have crossed 30. Other players to watch out for include Tranquillo Barnetta, Gokhan Inler, Valron Behrami and Reto Ziegler.

Verdict: Spain 4-1 Switzerland (Villa,Torres,Pedro,Silva / Yakin)
