Blackpool v Doncaster Preview

Posted on | April 5, 2010 | No Comments

While promotions and relegations can be confirmed in other gams on Monday, this could well be the biggest game of the day. They’re both seen as unfashionable sides, yet both Blackpool and Doncaster are riding high and both have excellent chance of netting a playoff position. As it stands, the Seasiders are just one point outside the top six while Donny find themselves six points away.

The season Blackpool have had is nothing short of unbelievable and Ian Holloway must surely be in contention for the manager of the year award in this division. Despite operating on a tiny budget, quite possibly one of the smallest in the division, Holloway has masterminded a superb campaign which sees his side sit in 7th place. Just one point keeps them out of the playoffs and judging by their current form, don’t be surprised if they manage to sneak in. The Seasiders have won three of their last four games and having scored eleven goals in the process, it’s clear they are a side that are full of confidence. With fixtures against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest still left to play though, they know that a victory here is essential in their push.

Doncaster are a club of similar stature and even though they’re a couple of places lower, they too have enjoyed a superb season. After conceding a late goal to lose to Plymouth at the weekend, their challenge for the playoffs will prove a little trickier although there’s no doubt that it’s still possible. Having lost two of their last three games you could say that their form is tailing off, but their remaining fixtures are certainly easier than a few of their rivals and that could prove key if they are to net a playoff position.

As for team news, there’s little to report for Blackpool although even after their victory over Scunthorpe on Friday, you’d expect changes to be made. Ian Holloway has been a firm follower of the rotation system throughout the season and don’t be surprised if he utilizes it again. Doncaster on the other hand have been dealt a huge blow with the news that Billy Sharp could be out for the rest of the season with a thigh problem. Sharp is Rovers’ leading scorer by quite some margin and his absence could hinder any playoff hopes significantly. Other than that, Sean O’Driscoll doesn’t have any other concerns.

Blackpool are in superb form at the moment and we believe that could continue here. The loss of Billy Sharp is a huge blow to Doncaster and without his firepower, they could experience problems. In our view, Blackpool will continue their charge and record a 3-1 victory.
