New Zealand vs West Indies preview

A day after losing to the World Champions,West Indies face Australia’ southern neighbours in their second Super Eight game in Antigua.
The rain ensured that the game against the Aussies went into the reserve day, which means that the hosts have less than 24 hours to rest for the game against the Kiwis. Also, the way the batting collapsed against Australia would have been a matter of concern for the Windies think tank with only Sarwan, Lara and Ramdin offering some resistance. The bowling wasn’t upto the mark, letting in 300+ runs. The only positive that Lara’s side can take out of that game is that they now have an idea of how the pitch plays, whereas New Zealand do not. Chris Gayle hasn’t really got going in this tournament and his 2 off 23 balls against Australia is something he would like to forget quickly.
The Kiwis, like the Windies, have come into the super eight after winning all three of their group games. They have their injury worries though. Darry Tuffey and Lou Vincent will not take any further part in the World Cup due to injury. Ross Taylor misses this game with his hamstring injury, so Peter Fulton is expected to open the batting with Hamish Marshall occupying the no.3 slot. Mark Gillespie hasn’t recovered from his virus, and it looks like there will be a toss up between Jeetan Patel and Michael Mason for the last bowlers’ slot. The Kiwis beat Australia 3-0 at home before coming to the World Cup, and they do look like one of the more settled sides after the group stages of the event.
The Kiwis don’t have a great track record against the West Indies, but I think they have enough firepower to win today. Bond will pose a threat with the ball, as he always does, and Fulton and Fleming to play well with the bat. For the Windies, Brian Lara loves Antigua, and he will need to play well if they are to win.
