Liverpool’s last game of March 2010 sees them host Steve Bruce’s Sunderland at Anfield this Sunday. Bet on Liverpool vs Sunderland with our recommended bookmakers after reading this preview.
Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United last week. The Reds did take the lead in that game through Fernando Torres, but their performance in the second half proved to be their undoing as United tightened their hold over the title by winning 2-1. The result also dealt a huge blow to Liverpool’s chances of finishing fourth. Going into this weekend’s round of games, Liverpool are four points behind Spurs and two behind Man City, and both teams have played one league game less than Liverpool.
Liverpool FC form- last five games- most recent first-
Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool ( Fernando Torres)
Liverpool 3-0 Lille OSC ( Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres*2)
Liverpool 4-1 Portsmouth ( Fernando Torres*2, Ryan Babel, Alberto Aquilani)
Lille OSC 1-0 Liverpool
Wigan 1-0 Liverpool
Sunderland have managed to string together a set of decent results and the North East club are unbeaten in the Premier League since 20 February, when they lost 2-0 to Arsenal. However the Wearsiders are one of the poorest travellers in the league this season- they have won just once in fifteen trips away from the Stadium of Light. Their midweek away draw at Villa Park was a creditable achievement, and Steve Bruce will be hoping that his boys can improve upon that performance.
Sunderland form- last five games- most recent first
Aston Villa 1- Sunderland ( Fraizer Campbell)
Sunderland 3-1 Birmingham City ( Darren Bent*2, Fraizer Campbell)
Sunderland 1-1 Man City ( Kenwyne Jones)
Sunderland 4-0 Bolton ( Darren Bent*3, Fraizer Campbell)
Sunderland 0-0 Fulham
As you can see, Torres and Gerrard look like the most likely scorers for Liverpool, despite the latter’s poor recent individual form. For Sunderland, the trio of Campbell, Bent and Jones seem to be doing all the scoring.
Verdict:- Sunderland beat Liverpool in the reverse fixture earlier this season thanks to Darren Bent’s beach goal. However given Sunderland’s poor away form, Liverpool should take three points here.
Liverpool 1-0 Sunderland ( Torres)
