Egypt skipper Ahmed Hassan marked his record breaking 170th cap with two goals and an own goal to help the Pharaohs overcome Cameroon in the quarterfinals. Hassan first turned Achille Emana’s corner into his own goal, but atoned for it with a speculative long range effort that bounced just in front of Carlos Kameni and went in.

A horrendous backpass from Geremi allowed the prolific Mohamed Geddo to put Egypt 2-1 ahead in extra time and minutes later Hassan made it 3-1 with a free kick that never went above the goal line in the first place.

Egypt 3-1 Cameroon ( Ahmed Hassan*2, Geddo)
Egypt 2-0 Benin ( Al Mohammadi, Moteab)
Egypt 2-0 Mozambique (Dario Khan OG, Geddo)
Egypt 3-1 Nigeria (Moetab, Hassan, Geddo)
Egypt 1-0 Mali ( Mohamed Nagui)

Like Egypt, Algeria also scored three in their quarterfinal clash. The Desert Foxes dumped pre tournament favourites Ivory Coast out of the tournament thanks to Hameur Bouazza’s extra time winner. It was a rather unexpected victory, given the scratchy displays Rabah Saadane’s side had put in during their group games.

Ivory Coast 2-3 Algeria ( Karim Matmour, Madjid Bougherra, Hameur Bouazza)
Angola 0-0 Algeria
Mali 0-1 Algeria ( Rafik Halliche)
Algeria 0-3 Malawi
Algeria 1-0 Egypt (Antar Yahia)

Egypt have the advantage of playing at Benguela- they have played all their four tournament games here. The failure to qualify for the World Cup will still play on the minds of many Egyptian players and they will want to ensure that Algeria do not deny them a third straight continental title.

Verdict:- Tight game, but Egypt to squeeze through.

Egypt 1-0 Algeria ( Emad Moetab)
