Game: Nigeria vs Mozambique (African Nations Cup Group C)
Date: 20th January 2010
KO time: 17:00 Angolan time
Venue: Estadio Alto da Chela, Lubango
There is a lot of pressure on Shaibu Amodu as he leads the Super Eagles into a vital game against the Black Mambas at Lubango. The Nigerians wilted against the Egyptians and escaped with a narrow win against the Squirrels who managed to hit the bar on a number of occasions. Failure to get a result against Mozambique could cost Amodu his job.
Nigeria – recent form – most recently played game on top
Nigeria 1-0 Benin (Yakubu)
Nigeria 1-3 Egypt (Obasi)
Kenya 2-3 Nigeria ( Obafemi Martins*2, Yakubu)
Nigeria 1-0 Mozambique ( Victor Obinna)
Nigeria 2-2 Tunisia ( Peter Odemwingie, Michael Eneramo)
The Super Eagles need to avoid defeat to qualify behind Egypt in second place from Group C. If Nigeria manage to either win or draw against the Mambas, the result of the Egypt-Benin tie would be irrelavant.
Danny Shittu and Peter Odemwinge came into the side against Benin and made a lot of difference to the Eagles’ side. Victor Obinna who scored the winner when the sides last met should provide another good attacking option from the bench. Obafemi Martins has surprisingly not featured in the two games so far. Uwa Echiejile and Nwaneri Obinna are on a yellow card.
Mozambique – recent form – most recently played game on top
Mozambique 0-2 Egypt
Mozambique 2-2 Benin (Lobo, Fumo)
Gabon 2-0 Mozambique
Mozambique 1-0 Tunisia ( Dario)
Nigeria 1-0 Mozambique
Even though Mozambique find themselves at the bottom of the group, the country where Eusebio was born find themselves with a simple task to qualify. A win against the mighty Nigerians coupled with Benin’s inability to defeat Egypt would see them through to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
Forwards Tico-Tico and Dario Monteiro who have 168 caps and 48 goals among them for the East African nation between them have not scored in the tournament. The game against Nigeria would be a great time to open their account.
Match Verdict: Much as I would like the underdogs to walk away with the glory, I’d have to prgamatic. I’ll fancy Nigeria to earn a tough draw against the Mambas and go through to the next stage.
Nigeria 0-0 Mozambique
