Game: Burkina Faso vs Ghana (African Nations Cup Group B)
Date: 19th January 2010
KO time: 17:00 Angolan time
Venue: Estadio 11 de Novembro,Luanda
Burkina Faso look to make it to the knockout stages for only the second time in their history when they take on a young Ghana side missing a host of key players including their captain Michael Essien. A loss for Ghana would be a serious setback in the preparation for the World Cup in six months’ time while Burkina Faso have nothing to lose against their fancied opponents.
Burkina Faso – recent form – most recently played game on top
Burkina Faso 0-0 Ivory Coast
Burkina Faso 1-0 Malawi ( Moumouni Dagano)
Guinea 1-2 Burkina Faso ( Moumouni Dagano, Habib Bamogo)
Ivory Coast 5-0 Burkina Faso
Mali 3-0 Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso have one point from their only game so far. They will qualify for the knockout stages if they simply avoid defeat against Ghana. Burkina Faso have struggled to score in recent games as the stats suggest and they’ll set up to defend against the Black Stars. World Cup qualifying round top scorer Moumouni Dagano will be the go-to man for Burkina Faso. He will be supported in attack by Youssouf Koné, Habib Bamogo and the ever impressive Hamburg midfielder Jonathan Pitroipa. Saidou Panandetiguiri and Paul Koulibaly are carrying a yellow card into the game.
Ghana – recent form – most recently played game on top
v. Ivory Coast (Loss 1-3) Asamoah
v. Malawi (Draw 0-0)
v. Angola (Draw 0-0)
v. Mali (Draw 2-2) Amoah, Annan
v. Benin (Loss 0-1)
Ghana need a win to make the knockout stages. And they have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the clash. Ghana’s captain Michael Essien has been declared unfit for this crucial game against the Stallions. Essien has failed to recover completely from the hamstring injury he suffered at Chelsea last month. Milovan Rajevac has a host of injury problems with first choice defenders John Pantsil and John Mensah not fully fit. Ghana are without the services of Sulley Muntari and Stephen Appiah and Rosenborg medio Anthony Annan is also a doubt. In the absence of these key players; Gyan Asamoah, Kwadwo Asamoah, Matthew Amoah, Andre Ayew would have to shoulder added responsibilty.
Match Verdict:There isn’t much to be excited about either squad. I’ll sit on the fence with a 1-1 draw which will see Burkina Faso qualify and Ghana being knocked out.
Burkina Faso 1-1 Ghana (Pitroipa//Asamoah)
