Little Malawi could create history if they beat Mali in their final group game at the 2010 African Cup of Nations on Monday. A win for the Flames against Mali will see them qualify for the last eight for the first time in their history.
Mali came back from four goals down against Angola on the opening day of the tournament, but there was no repeat of that feat in the second round of group games as they slumped to a 1-0 loss against Algeria.
Mali’s defence was at fault for the goal. There were three players around Rafik Halliche, but he still managed to get to Ziani’s free kick and head it in.
Malawi will look to take advantage of any similar Malian deficiencies on Monday. The Flames will have Russel Mwafulirwa back and the lanky striker can pose problems for the Malians at set pieces.
To compound it all, Mali will be without the services of Real Madrid’s Mahamadou Diarra and Boulogne’s Bakary Soumare as the duo are suspended. The loss of Diarra in particular will hurt as he pulls the strings for Mali in the centre of the park.

Malawi stunned Algeria 3-0 in their first game, but could not repeat the feat against Angola in their next game. The Flames held their own for forty five minutes, but fell behind when Flavio’s thumping header gave Angola the lead. Five minutes later, Peter Mponda was caught in possession and Malawi were punished as Manucho scored Angola’s second.

Mali were denied a training session before the flight to Cabinda, and that angered their players and Stephen Keshi. However, they’ve still not shown what they are capable of in this tournament.
Verdict:- Mali 2-1 Malawi ( Frederic Kanoute, S.Keita/ Mwafulirwa)
