CAN 2010 Angola vs Malawi – Betting Preview

Posted on | January 14, 2010 | No Comments

Hosts Angola would be hoping to put the disappointment of the first game behind them when the lock horns with Group A leaders Malawi at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Thursday. A win for Malawi will ensure that they make the knockout phase for the first time in their history.

Angola – last five results – most recent game on top

v. Mali (Draw 4-4) Flavio*2,Manucho,Gilberto
v. Gambia (Draw 1-1) Manucho
v. Estonia (Loss 0-1)
v. Ghana (Draw 0-0)
v. Cameroon (Draw 0-0)

The Black Antelopes will have to cut down on defensive errors in order to win against Malawi. Angola look very sharp in attack. The interplay between Manucho,Flavio,Gilberto and Mabina against Mali was very impressive. Flavio is the joint topscorer of the competition and scored two towering headers. He will be the main concern for Malawi’s captain Peter Maponda who plays at centre-half.

Coach Manuel Jose is sweating over the fitness of Dede and Gilberto who are struggling a muscle strain and knee injury respectively. In the absence of the two influential midfielders, Djalma and Mantorras may get a start. Stevio and Fernando Xara are on a yellow card.

Malawi – last five results – most recent game on top

Malawi 3-0 Algeria (Mwafulirwa,Kafoteka,Banda)
Ghana 0-0 Malawi
Egypt 1-1 Malawi ( Maupo Msowoya)
Burkina Faso 1-0 Malawi
Malawi 1-1 Ivory Coast ( Jacob Ngwira)

Kinnah Phiri has come out and said that his team are not in the group just to make up the numbers. They would go into this game with the same line-up that acheived great success against Algeria. Russell Mwafulirwa will lead the line for Malawi. Peter Maponda and Elvis Kafoteka who has already scored in the opening game will make life difficult for Angola from set-pieces.

Match Verdict: Angola looked really strong in their opening tie before letting a 4 goal lead slip. I’d fancy them to improve defensively and bring Malawi down to earth.

Angola 2-0 Malawi (Manucho,Flavio)
