In a crucial Group A tie, Mali take on Algeria at the at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda. Algeria who have already lost their first game may be kicked out of the tournament if they fail to secure a point against a Mali team who would be wanting to carry forward the momentum which saw them earn a 4-4 draw against Angola.
Mali recent form – most recently played game on top
v. Angola (Draw 4-4) Keita*2,Kanoute,Yatabare
v. Egypt (Loss 0-1)
v. Qatar (Draw 0-0)
v. Iran (Win 2-1) N’Diaye,Traore
v. Ghana (Draw 2-2)
Stephen Keshi has hinted that he would be making changes to his defence which was caught napping by Angola’s attacking flair. Mali left back Adama Tamboura who was terrorised by Mabina in their first game may lose his place. Momo Sissoko did not feature against Angola and will most likely make the first eleven. Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita who scored twice will also take his place from the start. Bakary Soumare, Mahamadou Diarra and Mahamane Traore have been booked and another yellow card would see them miss the game against Malawi.
Algeria recent form – most recently played game on top
Algeria 0-3 Malawi
Algeria 1-0 Egypt (Antar Yahia)
Egypt 2-0 Algeria
Algeria 3-1 Rwanda (Abdelkader Ghezzal, Nadir Belhadj, K.Ziani)
Algeria 1-0 Zambia ( Rafik Saïfi )
Although Algeria had nine players in the starting eleven who play in Europe, they were humiliated by the Flames in their opening game. Rabah Saadane has hinted at wholesale changes in the line-up in order to salvage Algeria’s stuttering campaign.
Antar Yahia, who became a national hero after scoring against Egypt in the playoff is not hundred percent fit. Mourad Meghni has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury. Abdelmalek Ziaya,Djamel Abdoun and Hameur Bouzza might get a look-in from the start. Karim Ziani is on a yellow card and needs to be careful in order to avoid suspension.
Match Verdict: I’ll fancy Mali to carry on with the momentum that saw them score four goals in the last 12 minutes against Angola. Mali to win 2-1.
Mali 2-1 Algeria (Kanoute, Keita // Ziani)
