NFL: Roller Coaster Season about to Wrap-up
Posted on | January 2, 2010 | No Comments
With one week left to play in the regular season, this NFL season has certainly been a roller coaster ride. But what season isn’t?
This is why I was so slow to jump on any bandwagons back in September and October. While the so-called “experts” were anointing the New York Giants as the best team in the NFC, and were anointing the Denver Broncos and their rookie head coach Josh McDaniels a great team, I was a little slower in my praise. Sure, I had the Giants as the top team back then but I was quick to point out that it didn’t mean anything. And it didn’t.
Now, the Giants are out of the playoffs and the Broncos are a team in disarray that may very well miss the playoffs.
Then we have the whole Brett Favre story too. Yeah Favre started out on fire. He was throwing touchdowns like crazy and not turning the ball over. The Vikings were on a major roll because of him. Many sports writers gave him the MVP.
But not so fast. Favre has a history of late season meltdowns and now that he’s 55 years old (or something close to that), that late season swoon is even more likely. And you know what? While the Vikings have played lesser teams, and while Favre hasn’t had to face the cold elements very often (only in Chicago where he actually played pretty well), the Vikings and Favre have still tanked.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of teams who started out slowly but are now hot. The San Diego Chargers are the perfect example of this. The Chargers are the best team in football right now.
The Philadelphia Eagles are a great example too. They were up and down all season but have now won 6 straight games. But be careful with the Eagles. They’ve yet to beat a playoff team this year. So, their winning streak is a little hollow. But if they can beat the Cowboys tomorrow then they will easily be the favorite to win the NFC.
So, we have one more game left in this roller coaster NFL season. And it all adds up to what should be great playoff games.
