NFL: Michael Vick and Courage? Philly Hits a New Low

Posted on | December 25, 2009 | No Comments

You’ve got to be kidding me, right? I mean, the Philadelphia Eagles’ players didn’t really vote Michael Vick as the winner of the Ed Block Courage Award. Did they? Well, they did. And sadly, if it had been anyone other than Philly who did it, I would be shocked. But you know what? I don’t see any other team doing this because the rest of the NFL has too much class.

That’s right, I wrote it. The Philadelphia Eagles and all their fans have no class. Don’t believe me? Try going to a game at The Linc wearing an opposing team’s jersey. If you don’t get thrown off the upper deck, you probably will get snow balls and beers thrown at you until security escorts YOU out of the stadium. Don’t believe me? Just search it on Google.

But this isn’t the fans. I mean, the fans have never seen their team win a championship. So, they are probably sick of watching losers. That’s no excuse to act like badly behaved 6th graders, but it’s probably the reason. But the players should know better.

Michael Vick had all the money he could ever want. He had all the fame. He had an adoring city in Atlanta and an adoring owner in Arthur Blank (owner of the Falcons). He had endorsements and what looked to be a great career in the NFL. Yet he chose to risk it all but ruthlessly and heartlessly fighting dogs and mistreating dogs. He committed the crime, got caught, and went to prison. In most lines of work that would mean his career is over. But not in the NFL.

In the NFL as long as you still have talent they will give you a shot. It didn’t take any courage for him to go back to playing football. Sorry, it just didn’t. And certainly didn’t take any courage for him to fight dogs. And it doesn’t take any courage for him to get this award either.

Perhaps the saddest thing is that the Eagles’ players must not have anyone more deserving of this award. In other words: Vick is gutless and heartless and he deserves the award. So, where does that leave the rest of the Eagles’ players? Well, they must all be a bunch of gutless players and people. Doesn’t bode very well for their chances this year, does it?
