Dav Whatmore’s young Bangladeshi side will look to spring another upset when they meet Sri Lanka in a Group B game at the Queens Park Oval.
The Bangaldeshis stunned India in their opening game, and victory here will ensure that they book a spot in the super eight stage of this tournament. The youngsters in the squad were outstanding against India as they outplayed their western neighbours in all departments of the game. Tamim Iqbal, Saqibul Hassan and Mushfiqur Rahim showed tremendous maturity to help Bangladesh script an unlikely win. Mashrafe Mortaza, the highest wicket taker in the last calendar year, took 4 wickets in that game. Spinners Abdul Razzak and Mohammad Rafique did an excellent job in the middle overs, and Syed Rasel complemented Mortaza well. As you might have understood, the whole team played well as a unit, and that is precisely what they will need to do against Sri Lanka today.
Sri Lanka were hardly tested in their first game against Bermuda, but the Bangladeshis will pose a sterner test. A loss against Bangladesh could see the Islanders thrown into a potential do or die against India, a situation Tom Moody will clearly like to avoid. Many of the Lankan batsmen got starts, but only Jayawardene, Sangakarra and Silva converted them. Maharoof and Malinga cleaned up Bermuda and on a pitch which offers assistance to both fast bowers and spinners, Vaas and Murali will be dangerous too. The Bangladeshi batsmen will need to apply themselves, and settle down before going for the big shots
Sri Lanka have beaten their opponents today 17 times in 18 encounters. History and paper suggest that the Lankans will win comfortably. However as we know, games are not won on paper. The Bangladeshis are more than capable of creating an upset. Mortaza to do his bit with the ball, and all the batsmen to chip in. For the Lankans, Vaas and Sangakarra are the potential matchwinners.
