NFL: The Problem with Randy Moss

Posted on | December 15, 2009 | No Comments

A few short years ago when the New England Patriots acquired Randy Moss from the Los Angeles Raiders, the entire NFL world raised their collective eyebrows and waited to see how he would do in New England. Well, the next season he and Brady set all sorts of records. But they didn’t win the Super Bowl.

Last year, with Brady out, Moss was seen a few times taking plays off. Of course this is what happened to him in Los Angeles. But he never took a game off like he did this past week. And I suspect he took this game off because the Patriots are struggling this year and Moss knows they aren’t going to win the Super Bowl.

The laughable thing here is that the New England coach, Bill Belichick, defended Randy. Coach defended his losing an easy fumble, breaking off routes, and running some routes at half speed? Really? And this after he decided to get tough with a certain defensive player who was 9 minutes late on the morning of snow storm? Well, I wonder what the other players are thinking about all of this? Not only is Coach in danger of losing this year, he’s in danger of losing the respect of his players forever.

But back to Moss and that trade: Obviously the trade cost the Pats next to nothing. So, it was a great trade for the Pats and a horrible trade for the Raiders. However, what if Randy keeps tanking and it divided this team? What then? Will that trade still look as great?

Of course it won’t. And I would be interested to see where all of this goes. Moss is really just a bad loss away from completely shutting it down. And then it won’t be worth it for the Pats to have him on their team. Because Moss has the potential to hurt this team or help this team, and which one he does is up to Moss. If I were a Pats fan I would be nervous about that.
