NFL: Previewing Eagles at Giants
Posted on | December 12, 2009 | No Comments
There is a huge NFC East match-up on Sunday night this week. The Philadelphia Eagles are rolling into New York (New Jersey, really) to take on the Giants. This will be a game that will probably go a long way in determining which of these teams will go to the playoffs and which one will have to fight hard the last 3 weeks or go home.
Now, before we get into which team should win and why, let’s get one thing straight: This is NOT a winner take all game as many in the media are trying to make it. Yes, many of the “experts” in the media think this division will be won by either the Giants or the Eagles and they’ve completely discounted the Cowboys, a team that’s leading the division right now. Given the way Dallas has played in December’s past, and given their tough schedule, I can see people picking against the Cowboys but I can’t see completely discounting them. But many of the “experts” who picked against Dallas are the same people who picked Pittsburgh to win the rest of their games and make it to the playoffs. Not good for them.
As for Sunday night’s game, the Giants were in a tailspin until they beat the Cowboys last week. That was a much-win game for the Giants and they won it. But they didn’t outplay the Cowboys and they didn’t really deserve to win the game. They benefited greatly from an obvious missed holding call on Jacobs’s touchdown, and they got a punt return for a touchdown.
I don’t see the Giants getting lucky again. Plus the Eagles are playing really good football too. I think they’ll put a lot of pressure on Eli Manning and force him into a couple critical mistakes. And I think the Eagles will hit the Giants with 2 or 3 big plays for touchdowns.
But in the end, the Giants just aren’t good enough on offense. That’s why they’ll lose this week and that’s why they’ll lose at least one of their 3 remaining games too. That will drop them to no better than 9-7 on the year and most likely out of the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Eagles will be rolling and will have a real chance of winning the NFC East.
