The Republic of Ireland face a do or die situation when they travel to France for the second leg of their World Cup playoff tie on Wednesday. The Irish are bidding to reach their first WC in eight years, but Giovanni Trapattoni’s men will have to come up with one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comebacks in the history of Irish football to upset Les Bleus.

France won the first leg 1-0 in Dublin, a very creditable result considering that Croke Park was filled with over 70,000 Irish supporters baying for French blood. Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka scored the winner in the 72nd minute of the game.

France have some injury problems. Central defender Eric Abidal has pulled out, which means Sebastien Squillaci might be called in to partner William Gallas. Midfielders Jeremy Toulalan and Abou Diaby are also out.

France form- last five games- all competitions- France scorers in brackets

Ireland 0-1 France ( Nicolas Anelka)

France 3-1 Austria ( Karim Benzema, Thierry Henry, Andre Pierre Gignac)

France 5-0 Faroe Islands ( Andre Pierre Gignac*2, Wiliam Gallas, Nicolas Anelka, Karim Benzema)

Serbia 1-1 France ( Thierry Henry)

France 1-1 Romania ( Thierry Henry)

Your best bets for France scoring would be one of Anelka, Henry and Gignac.

The Irish were incensed after Lassana Diarra’s alleged slur after the first leg, and will have the support of over 25,000 Green Army fans who will be travelling with them across the Channel.

It will be a big night for Damien Duff, who will be earning his 80th Irish cap on Wednesday. The likes of Duff, Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle need to be at the top of their game if the Irish are to upset France.

Ireland will also be hoping that Richard Dunne, Sean St.Ledger and co. can exploit any chinks in the French armour from set pieces.

Ireland form- last five games-all competitions- Irish scorers in brackets

Ireland 0-1 France

Ireland 0-0 Montenegro

Ireland 2-2 Italy ( Glenn Whelan, Sean St.Ledger)

Ireland 1-0 South Africa ( Liam Lawrence)

Cyprus 1-2 Ireland ( Kevin Doyle, Robbie Keane)

Verdict:- If France score once, Ireland’s chances will become even more remote.

France 2-1 Ireland ( Henry, Gagnac/ Sean St.Ledger)
