Blackpool v Scunthorpe Preview

Posted on | November 6, 2009 | No Comments

These two sides were tipped to struggle at the start of the season with both clubs probably having the smallest budgets in the division. As it turns out neither are in the relegation zone though and Blackpool are performing especially well, with the Seasiders sat just one place outside the play offs.

Blackpool have been one of the surprise packages of the season and Ian Holloway has seemingly transformed them. After only just avoiding the drop last season with a squad mostly made up of loan players, it was always going to be an almighty task for any new manager. However, Holloway has brought some real gems into the club and as it stands, only goal difference keeps them out of the play offs. They are unbeaten in their last four and having won two of those, it’s fair to say that they will be a tough opponent for anyone at the moment. In their last game they were unlucky not to grab all the points as well, with a last minute leveller from Doncaster denying the Seasiders another away victory.

If Blackpool operate under tight financial constraints, then Scunthorpe’s situation is even bleaker. The Iron have very little resources yet Nigel Adkins is another manager who is getting the very best out of his team and they currently sit in 18th position. While it may sound quite a lowly position to be in for most sides, any Scunny fan would be delighted to finish there considering the size of the club. However, their recent form has been poor and they need to improve if they are to be comfortably above the drop zone. They’ve lost their last three and while one of those was in the Carling Cup, Nigel Adkins will know the importance of improving both form and confidence.

As for team news, Blackpool will be boosted with Charlie Adam’s return after the midfielder completed a one game suspension. However, Ishmel Demontagnac will sit out through a ban, while Neil Eardly will also not feature due to a knee problem. Scunthorpe on the other hand have a few problems and Nigel Adkins could be without a few first team regulars. Gary Hooper, Josh Wright, Marcus Williams and Ian Morris are all doubtful although Adkins should be able to play Rob Jones, who has recovered from a back injury. Elsewhere, George Friend is tipped to make his first appearance for the Iron.

Scunthorpe have struggled in recent weeks while Blackpool seem to be going from strength to strength. The Seasiders are unbeaten at home in the league this season and we fully expect that to continue here, even though their opponents will make it tough. It’ll be a battle, but the home side will just come out on top in a 1-0 victory.
