MLB: Yankees are World Champions.. Again

Congratulations to the Yankees. They just won their 27th – and record setting – World Championship. They made it through the ups and downs and they hoisted the trophy at the end of the season. And they deserved it.
And how fitting it was that Andy Pettitte was on the mound on that night. Pettitte was a “homegrown” Yankee. Though he left the Yankees for a short time, he is one of the few Yankees who weren’t bought and paid for with money that no other team could afford. And Andy is the only starting pitcher that has more than one year with the Yankees.
And how fitting it was that Hideki Matsui was the MVP. He’s been with the Yankees a long time since coming over from Japan. And he’s been a great foot soldier for them. He’s been lost among all the stars that the Yankees have brought in over the last few years. He’s been overshadowed by all the high priced free agents. Yet, there he was driving in RBI like crazy. And now he is the MVP of the World Series.
Finally, how fitting it was that Derek Jeter made the first out of the last inning. Jeter is a great player – in my opinion one of the best Yankees ever – and he’s a great Captain for the team too. Jeter gets his first World Series title since his first few years with the team.
So, the Yankees are back where their fans expect them to be every year. They are World Champions. Celebrate it. Be happy Yankees fans.
Because in just a few short weeks, the Yankees will be ready to spend more money and begin to try to put another championship team together. And the fans will begin clammering for another title next year.
Because that’s the way it is in New York. So, celebrate for a few weeks, and then it’s time to begin demanding number 28.
