Sri Lanka vs Bermuda preview

Posted on | March 15, 2007 | No Comments

Sri Lanka will be looking to start off in the same fashion as Australia and West Indies when they play world cup debutants Bermuda in Trinidad on Thursday.

This world cup would be the last for veteran Sanath Jayasuriya and the Matara Marauder would want to leave it on a high. The Lankans will go into this game with both Murali and Chaminda Vaas. They will be playing their best 11, and are not leaving anything to chance. The Lankans lost one of their warm up games- to New Zealand, but do not read too much into that performance. On their day, Sri Lanka are a devastating unit- they have a great blend of youth and experience. They have many left handers- Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Sangakarra etc. to keep the right hand left hand  combination going. They have players who can graft as well as accelerate at will. The likes of Lasith Malinga and Chamara Silva have matured tremendously in recent times.  Tharanga scored 70 and 106 in the two warm up games, so he is in good touch. Jayasuriya and Sangakarra are also possible candidates for a good performance with the bat.

Bermuda made their debut on this very ground against Canada last year, and won that game too. They have a West Indian coach in Gus Logie.  They lost to Zimbabwe by six wickets and were shot out by England for 45 in their two warm up games. Their batting mainstays are Irving Romaine, their captain and David Hemp, who plays for Glamorgan.Dwayne Leverock, their left arm spinner, has attracted a lot of eyeballs for his rotund figure. Leverock has a 5 wicket haul to his credit and also dismissed Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen in the warm up game.

This is a game for the Lankans to stamp their authority and I am pretty sure that they will do it. I expect Tharanga and Sangakarra to shine with the bat and Vaas and Malinga to shine with the ball. Maharoof and Murali will also cause havoc if they get the red cherry in their hands. Sri Lanka, to win this comfortably. The Bermudan batting isn’t renowned for its ability and I foresee a thrashing for them.
