Form guide – Aston Villa (most recently played game on top)
v. Manchester City (Draw) 1-1 (Dunne)
v. Blackburn (Loss) 1-2 (Agbonlahor)
v. Cardiff (Win) 1-0 (Agbonlahor)
v. Portsmouth (Win) 2-0 (Milner, Agbonlahor)
v. Birmingham City (Win) 1-0 (Agbonlahor)
Aston Villa have recovered from a sloppy start and are placed comfortably in the top half of the table. Although the don’t appear as consistent as last season, they managed a creditable 1-1 draw against Manchester City in their last game. Gabby Agbonlahor, who started for England against Belarus in midweek has lead the line superbly and has scored in the last 4 out of 5 games. It’d be interesting to see who partners Gabby up-front. Emile Heskey has expressed his desire to leave Villa to get more first team football in order to enhance his chances of playing for England at the World Cup, but he might again start on the bench as O’Neill is known to prefer Carew over him.
Ashley Young (foot), Curtis Davies (shoulder) and Stewart Downing (ankle) are unlikely to feature in the encounter. Right back Luke Young could return to action against Chelsea.
Form guide – Chelsea (most recently played game on top)
Chelsea 2-0 Liverpool (Malouda, Anelka)
APOEL 0-1 Chelsea ( Nicolas Anelka)
Wigan 3-1 Chelsea ( Didier Drogba)
Chelsea 1-0 QPR ( Salomon Kalou)
Chelsea 3-0 Tottenham ( Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole)
Following the minor blip at Wigan, Chelsea have resumed their winning ways. They won a tricky encounter against Liverpool heading into the international break, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda. Chelsea should start as favorites for the game, as they almost always to for most games.
Carlo Ancelloti has a lot of selection problems going into the game, albeit in a good sense. Petr Cech and Joe Cole are back from suspension and injury respectively and could feature fully. Yuri Zhirkov also provides an added option on the left wing.
Match verdict:- In their last ten meetings, Villa have never beaten Chelsea. The same trend should continue as Chelsea look to stamp their authority on the League. I’ll go for a 2-1 Chelsea win. (Agbonlahor // Lampard, Anelka)
