MLB: First Day of the Playoffs

Posted on | October 8, 2009 | No Comments

Yesterday, 6 of the 8 playoff teams were in action. The St Louis Cardinals locked horns with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies played against the Philadelphia Phillies, and the New York Yankees took on the Minnesota Twins.

As for the first game, the Rockies and the Phillies played each other to kick the day off. And, as expected, the Phillies took the game. The Phillies scored a big win. By the end of the 6th inning, the Phillies held a 5-0 lead and they went on to win the game 5-1. While that’s a good win for the Phillies, the Rockies won’t be panicking. They just need to win one in Philadelphia and then win in Colorado.

The second game featured the Yankees hosting the Twins. This was a must win game for the Yanks and they did win the game. They won it easily, 7-2. Sabathia looked good on the mound. But even more promising for the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez produced. A-Rod went 2-4 with 2 RBI. If A-Rod reverses his postseason failures this year then the Yankees will be even tougher to beat.

But the Twins are fine with losing. They were fresh off a win over the Tigers and they knew the odds of winning were very slim. They will now focus on winning the second game. If that doesn’t happen then they’ll just try to win at home and then steal game 5 back in New York.

The last game of the day featured the Dodgers hosting the Cards. This series has all the looks of a 5 game series as it starts. Last night the Dodgers beat the Cards 5-3. But just like the other 2 away teams didn’t panic, there’s no reason for the Cards to panic either. They will be very happy if they can just take the next game.

Tonight, the last 2 teams will take the field. That will be the Angels and the Red Sox and should be another great series.
