Aston Villa vs Man City – Betting Preview

Posted on | October 4, 2009 | No Comments

Game: Aston Villa vs Manchester City
Competition: Barclays Premier League
Venue: Villa Park, Birmingham
Time: 20:00 GMT

With Manchester United and Tottenham failing to gain maximum points, Monday’s clash could see either of Villa or City strengthen their position at the top of the League table. There is expected to be an edge to the game given the movement of players between the two teams in the close season. Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry signed for Manchester City while City’s four- time player of the year Richard Dunne was shipped out to Villa. Both players would have a point to prove as they did not part ways on the greatest of terms.

Form guide – Aston Villa (most recently played game on top)

v. Blackburn (Loss) 1-2 (Agbonlahor)
v. Cardiff (Win) 1-0 (Agbonlahor)
v. Portsmouth (Win) 2-0 (Milner, Agbonlahor)
v. Birmingham City (Win) 1-0 (Agbonlahor)

Apart from the sluggish loss away to Blackburn, Aston Villa have been in prime form. Gabby Agbonlahor has scored in their last four games and his pace will cause a lot of problems for Toure and Lescott. Steve Sidwell could be back for this tie after missing the loss to Blackburn. Luke Young could make the bench as he builds up his fitness after a period on the sidelines through injury. Wifred Bouma (ankle), Curtis Davies (shoulder), Stuart Downing (foot) will not feature for Villa.

Form guide – Manchester City (most recently played game on top)
v. West Ham United (Win) 3-1 (Tevez*2, Petrov)
v. Fulham (Win) 2-1 (aet) (Barry,Toure)
v. Manchester United(Loss) 3-4 (Barry, Bellamy *2)
v. Arsenal(Win) 4-2 (Richards, Bellamy, Adebayor, SWP)

Manchester City go into the game having secured 15 points from their first six encounters. A win at Villa Park with other favourable results could see them rise as high as third in the table. City welcome Emmanuel Adebayor to their squad, after missing three games due to suspension as a result of his controversial challenge on van Persie. Adebayor had scored four times in as many games before suspension and will be the main threat. Roque Santa Cruz, Michael Johnson and Vincent Kompany are all expected to push for a place in the squad after recovering from injuries. Robinho and Nedum Onouha are the only ones not in contention for the trip to Villa Park.

Match verdict:- The same fixture last year saw Villa run out 4-2 winners. Villa have been strong at home apart from their opening day defeat to Wigan. This one is too close to predict conclusively. I’ll sit on the fence and go with a hard fought draw.
