West Brom v Plymouth Preview

Posted on | September 11, 2009 | No Comments

The expectations for these two sides are completely the opposite as West Brom approach this season looking to bounce back to the Premiership, while Plymouth are tipped to struggle. As it stands, that’s exactly what’s happening, as West Brom sit in 2nd position while Plymouth’s return of just two points means they’re placed in the relegation zone.

West Brom have built a reputation over the years as being something of a yo-yo team and by the looks of things, it looks as though that won’t be changing this season. The Baggies have bounced between the Championship and Premiership and having made a positive start to the season, they are already tipped for promotion. A few people weren’t sure how new manager Roberto Di Mateo would cope with life in this division although already it looks to have been an inspired appointment, with the Hawthorns outfit collecting eleven points from their opening five games. They haven’t lost a game in any competition and with two home games approaching; they certainly look to be in a strong position at the moment.

Plymouth on the other hand have had a dreadful start and Paul Sturrock’s men have collected just the two points all season. That has left them sat in 22nd position and considering the fact they were the subject of a takeover in the summer, that won’t impress the club’s new owners. In fact, some are even suggesting that Sturrock should start looking over his shoulder, especially after a dismal end to the previous campaign. They’ve failed to win a single match this season and having also lost their last three, times are certainly tough at Home Park. However in Sturrock they have a man who has vast experience and success as a manager. While he has lost many key players over the years, still don’t be surprised if he turns things around and stabilizes the Pilgrims.

As for team news, West Brom just have the one concern as they await for Gonzalo Jara’s visa application to be processed. The Chilean international was expected to feature a fortnight ago but the process has taken much longer than the club expected. However, there is some good news as Chris Brunt, Luke Moore and Chris Wood all look set to be available after shaking off injuries. As for Plymouth, Marcel Seip is unlikely to feature after the centre half was placed on the transfer list for a “serious breach of club discipline”. However, Paul Sturrock will have Karl Duguid, David McNamee and Darcy Blake available who were all doubts earlier in the week.

West Brom have the better side on paper and are also the in-form side. With that, we can predict nothing other than a Baggies win. Plymouth are under pressure and certainly won’t make it easy, but we expect a 2-1 home victory here.
