MLB: Jeter Going for Record
Posted on | September 8, 2009 | No Comments
Derek Jeter is just 4 hits away from having the most hits in New York Yankees history. Let me repeat that: Derek Jeter is just 3 hits form tying Lou Gehrig and 4 hits away from breaking Gehrig’s record. That’s it. That’s all.
It really is unbelievable that the with all the great players and all the great hitters that have pulled on the pinstripes, Derek Jeter is about to lead them all. It just goes to show, Jeter really is a great player and he’s also one of the best Yankee players ever, and that is saying a lot.
Of course, over the last couple of days Jeter has gone hitless. Though he’s been known to come-up big in clutch situations, certainly the current situation must be weighing heavily on Jeter. He is very close to immortality.
But don’t think that his little dry spell will last for too long. He can get hot in one game and break the record. I certainly expect him to have the record by the end of the weekend. Most likely he’ll have it before the weekend even arrives.
And then all the discussion can begin about just how great Jeter really is. Is he the best Yankees ever? I don’t think so. But, believe it or not, he is one of the best and he’s also one of the most under-rated. I know that sounds strange. He gets plenty of pub. But he has been really good for a really long time and yet he’s hardly ever mentioned along with the greatest shortstops of all time. Once he has the record, he will have to be in that discussion.
So, tonight Jeter will go against the Tampa Bay Rays and then tomorrow he’ll get another crack at the Rays. Then it will turn to the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. By the time that series is over, Jeter will be the record holder for most hits in Yankees history.
