MLB: Wild Card Races Getting Hotter
Posted on | September 5, 2009 | No Comments
Yesterday I wrote about how the divisional races were pretty much over. Of course, the Angels are only up on the Rangers by 3.5 games and the Dodgers lead the Rockies by just 4.5 games, but I’m still pretty confident in my prediction. However, the Wild Card is as hot as ever and it’s getting hotter with each passing day.
In the American League the Boston Red Sox have been playing great baseball but they still haven’t been able to pull away from the Texas Rangers. Last night the Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles while the Red Sox lost to the Chicago White Sox. So, now the Rangers are just 2 games back. This race looks like it will go all the way down to the end. The Rangers haven’t been to the playoffs in a decade but they just might have the team to do it this year. But the Red Sox have shown a lot of grit over the last couple of weeks and they won’t go quietly. Which ever team wins the AL Wild Card will truly earn it.
As great as the American League Wild Card race is, the National League Wild Card race is even better. For a few minutes it looked like the San Francisco Giants would pull into a tie with the Colorado Rockies. Then the Rockies came back and held onto their one game lead. Even the Florida Marlins almost pulled within 3 games – but they’re still 4 games back. But that’s close enough to catch both the Giants and the Rockies.
The great thing is that the Giants and the Rockies are both in the NL West. And they aren’t far behind the Dodgers. So, if both teams stay hot then they just might both sneak into the playoffs. (Of course I still have the Dodgers winning the division.)
So, as Labor Day weekend takes full flight, there is a lot of exciting baseball to be played. And the most excitement can be found in the Wild Card races.
