MLB: Looking at the American League on September 1st

Well, the summer hasn’t officially ended and Labor Day isn’t here yet either, but the month of August is over and that means the baseball season is turning into the stretch run and every game suddenly has more meaning. So, where teams stand now is very important and will only get more important with each passing day.
So, let’s begin in the American League East where the New York Yankees will win the division. I know it’s still a little early and a 6.5 game lead isn’t that big but the Yankees aren’t going anywhere. They’ll win this division and take home the best record in baseball.
In the American League Central the Detroit Tigers have the inside track to win the division but they can’t be comfortable. They Minnesota Twins have crawled back to 3.5 games behind the Tigers. And the Twins are red hot right now. They’re taking on the Chicago White Sox and they’re looking to gain some major ground on Detroit. (By the way, the White Sox are done. They just dumped Thome and they are a team that just can’t put it together.) The Tigers are starting to hit better and if they continue then they’ll win the division. But is there a worse deadline trade in the history of baseball than the Tigers getting Jarod Washburn? He’s worse than Lucas French (the young pitcher the Tigers gave-up for him) and a lot older.
In the West I still like the Angels. I like them even more now. They’re lead has grown to 6 games. The Rangers can’t afford to slip much farther back or they’ll be completely out of it.
And the Rangers better not slip much farther behind the Red Sox in the Wild Card race either. Right now the Rangers are 4 games back. I’m beginning to see now way that the Red Sox will lose this race.
So, I’m going with the Yankees, Tigers, Angels, and Red Sox. The only pick I don’t feel good about is the Tigers. But we’ll know a lot more in just one week.
