Sports betting is a type of gambling in which a wager is placed for predicting the winner of a sporting event such as Super Bowl, NHL, World Series Baseball, ATP tennis tourneys etc. The legality of sports betting varies from country to country and state to state. It is generally banned in North America while in many European countries it is highly regulated.

The US House of Representatives passed a bill in July 11, 2006 called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act which further strengthened the crack down on internet gambling. It bars banks and credit card companies from making collection for online betting. It provides exception to lotteries such as Powerball which are regulated by the state and horse racing.

The passage of the above Bill has left the $12 billion US online gambling industry in a state of confusion. While the bill has not put a lid on online gambling, it has curtailed financial transactions related to it. Sportsbooks like Betgameday, Bodog.com, ViP.com, nine.com, sportsbetting.com, betcris.com, sportsbook.com, Canbet.com and Intertops sportsbook still allow US players for betting on various games like, North American sports: NBA, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NCAA FB, NHL; International sports: Golf, tennis, soccer (English Premier League), rugby league and union, cricket, snooker, auto racing; Horse Racing: major and minor US tracks and major international tracks. They are generally registered in Europe or the Caribbean. The wagering limit varies from $500 to $5000 for betting on sides and between $500 and $2000 on totals. They offer a deposit guarantee of $1000 for operators.

Bodog.com which is registered in Costa Rica has feature called Bodog Live which allows betting on every play and every move on NHL, NCAA basketball and NBA on game days. It allows deposit methods like NUcharge, click2pay, eWalletXpress and credit cards for US players currently.
