MLB: Tight Races
Posted on | August 23, 2009 | No Comments
Tomorrow I’ll go ahead and look at the top of each division in the American and National League. But right now, with the races tightening in a couple divisions and in the Wild Card, let’s spend a couple minutes looking at these races.
Let’s start with the Wild Card race in the American League. They came back from their thumping at the hands of the Yankees on Friday with a thumping of their own on Saturday. These 2 teams will battle it out again on Sunday night. The Red Sox have to win if they hope to have any chance of winning the AL East. The also need to win if they want to maintain a couple games lead in the Wild Card race.
Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers are battling with the Tampa Bay to stay ahead of them in the Wild Card. The Rangers can put a little space between themselves and the Rays with a win on Sunday. And they can pull to within a game of the Red Sox if the Yankees beat the Sox.
The other Sox, the Chicago White Sox, are now within 2.5 games of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. The Tigers continue to swing a horrible bat on the road. As has been the case all season, the Tigers won’t pull away from the rest of the AL Central until they start swinging their bats better.
The other interesting race – surprisingly enough – is in the NL West. The Los Angeles Dodgers looked like they would win the division easily. However, the Colorado Rockies (along with the San Fransisco Giants) have been a lot better than anyone thought they’d be. Now, the Rockies are just 3.5 games back. And in the Wild Card race the Rockies have open up a 3 game lead over the Giants. The Rockies and the Giants will play a big game on Sunday night. The Rockies can continue to creep up on the Dodgers and lengthen their win in the Wild Card race.
