MLB: Yankees and Red Sox Back At It

The Yankees and Red Sox get ready to renew their rivalry this weekend. The last time these 2 teams met they were fighting it out for 1st place in the AL East. Now, the Red Sox are just fighting to try to stay alive to win the division. In fact, the Red Sox are also fighting to win the Wild Card now. If the Sox want any chance to win the division (and to stay on top of the Wild Card race) then they better win this series. In a perfect world for the Red Sox, they would sweep this series.
Both the Yankees and the Red Sox have good hitting but I would give the edge to the Yankees. However, the Red Sox are at home so we’ll give it an overall push. The bullpen’s of each team are about equal. So, this series will come down to starting pitching and the Yankees have a clear advantage here.
The Yankees will send Petite to the hill tonight and then AJ Burnett tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are going with Brad Penny and Tazawa. The Yankees have the clear advantage with both of these match-ups.
The Red Sox do have the advantage on Sunday though. They’ll go with Beckett. But the Yankees will have Sabathia on the mound. So, the advantage for the Red Sox will be minimal.
I like the Yankees to take the 1st 2 games of the series and then the Red Sox to win on Sunday. This will drop the Red Sox back another game. It will all but give the division to the Yankees. And it will keep the Red Sox just fighting for their playoffs lives.
Let’s face it: The Red Sox are fighting to stay alive this weekend while the Yankees are trying to knock them out of the divisional race. The Red Sox are certainly the more desperate team. But we’ll see if that desperation makes up for their lack of starting pitching the 1st 2 games.
